Searching for the Right Teacher
If you are struggling to find the right teacher near you… I feel your pain. When my teacher moved away we had a hard time finding a great teacher. My mom contacted a couple of teachers to get on their waiting lists. In the meantime, my mom must have taken me to at least six different teachers. Unfortunately, none of them seemed to know how to really teach.
Want to Learn, Will Travel
Finally, one of the teachers called to tell us that they had a spot available. We drove 50 miles round-trip for my weekly lesson as a child. Years went by and I had advanced to the point that I needed lessons from a teacher with professional playing chops that also knew how to teach. I had to drive over 50 miles one-way to find a suitable teacher… That’s right—I drove over 100 miles round-trip, every week, in order to take lessons. And it was totally worth it. It was definitely not the ideal location for me. And on top of that it was more expensive than taking lessons from a nearby teacher. But, oh, what a difference the right teacher can make! I was making progress in my music-making from week to week. It was a sacrifice to spend the extra time and money. And it was totally worth every mile, every minute, and every dollar spent to learn from a teacher that really knew how to teach. The training I received was far beyond anything offered anywhere near my home, and it was just what I needed.
That teacher not only helped me learn how to develop my skills on the instrument—he also taught me strategies to improve my mental and emotional abilities. Indeed, those lessons cost more than other teachers. But I was learning to play so much better and in much less time than in lessons with other teachers. What I learned during that time led me to become a professional player. I’m grateful for that teacher and those invaluable lessons.
